Abstract

In order to inform discussions of grid emissions for plug-in electric vehicles, EPRI undertook an effort to create an estimate of current grid emissions and recent historical trends. The goal was to produce an up-to-date estimate that uses a methodology similar to the EPA’s Emissions & Generation Resource Integrated Database (eGRID) that would provide detailed results for the regional boundaries used in EPRI’s US Regional Economy, Greenhouse Gas, and Energy Model (US-REGEN). This report describes the development of the methodology for the estimate; validation of the estimate against other sources; a comparison of the US-REGEN regional representations against other aggregation representations; and an estimate of transmission and distribution losses, which are necessary for calculating consumption emissions.
