Abstract

Electric service providers worldwide are embarking on a journey to re-architect their business intelligence and analytics landscapes. This includes work to collapse data silos, to create enterprise wide analytics tools and to avail these tools and capabilities broadly across their organizations. Because the technology solutions are non-trivial in terms of costs there is a desire and need for quantifying the value of every potential insight from systems and data sets. A major component involves developing business cases with cross organizational support.

This paper provides perspectives from over a dozen organizations with experiences or success stories related to the business intelligence area and analytic tools deployment. Because of the significant overlap in the perspectives from analytically oriented utility professionals when asked which elements of data analytics planning are most closely linked with their successes, the paper presents commentaries and examples of six key areas associated with the creation of successful analytics programs and organizations:

  • Incorporating active executives
  • Employing the right people
  • Building the right analytics organizational structure
  • Crafting a solid business case
  • Implementing programs that inform decisions
  • Selecting the most appropriate technology
