Grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are expected to become more common in the near future. Contrary to popular belief, PV power plants are not maintenance free; they require a routine of continual monitoring, periodic inspection, scheduled preventive maintenance, and service calls. This white paper presents a variety of information on PV operations and maintenance (O&M), system monitoring, warranty coverage, and safety protocols.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) conducted in-depth interviews with subject matter experts at six U.S. utilities and six private companies to discern the current level of knowledge regarding the operation and maintenance of distributed PV plants, reliability experience, and expected future approaches to managing expanding PV system assets. This paper includes selected lessons learned to date and O&M best practices gleaned from experience by the interviewees.
