Arizona Public Service (APS) is working in collaboration with EPRI to assess and advance the use of smart inverters and energy storage in power distribution systems for:
Managing distribution voltage at individual customer sites
Improving power factor and reducing overall system losses
Responding to interruptions and outages
Adjusting power flows
Enabling interoperability among distributed resources and existing equipment (such as capacitor banks) and controls
This project will provide utilities, regulators, and other industry stakeholders with insights and best practices for deploying and operating smart inverters and equipping distribution systems to accommodate widely deployed distributed solar photovoltaics (PV) while achieving objectives for reliability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
This report provides initial findings regarding distribution capacity deferral, effect of solar variability on distribution equipment, determining smart inverter settings, and lessons learned from the initial field deployment.
