Abstract

Flash thermography for nondestructive application is being used in various industries, including aerospace, power generation, and manufacturing. Current flash thermography techniques are able to detect defects and anomalies but are limited in their abilities to quantify and disposition their extent in terms of size, depth, and severity. Enhancements to the application of flash thermography in terms of defect evaluation and characterization would make this technique a more valuable nondestructive evaluation inspection option on various power plant components and structures.

The project that is the subject of this report involved creating a MATLAB code that allows a user to input data acquired with flash thermography so that defects can be better classified in terms of their depth and shape. The program is able to analyze an input video, characterize flaws, and output results in a file format that is compatible with several computer-aided design programs and three-dimensional (3-D) printers for 3-D sample re-creation.
