Abstract

This report describes gaps between currently available Information and Communications Technology (ICT) capabilities and those ICT capabilities that will be desired by utilities over the next three to five years.

Background

EPRI’s ICT Innovators Forum was launched in June 2015 and includes innovators and vendors working to accelerate the commercialization of standards-based integration technology solutions, based on the priorities of electric utilities and forum participants. One important forum outcome is improved visibility of electric utilities’ needs and wants—technical desires that can help solution providers make next-generation ICT investments that have the potential for broad industry adoption. Therefore, a primary activity of the forum is an annual report that assesses the needs and wants of utilities with respect to current market offerings.

Objective

The objective of this analysis was to provide guidance on what utilities consider to be the most important gaps between currently available ICT capabilities and those ICT capabilities that will be desired over the next three to five years.

Approach

This first-year forum report is based on the extensive research—including a survey—performed for the purpose of developing the 2015 Information, Communication, and Cyber Security (ICCS) Roadmap. Gaps that were identified to exist between current capabilities and the future states are characterized, and the survey rankings of the gaps that fall into the top and bottom quartiles are identified.

Results

The impact and probability of success scores assigned to the gaps by the utilities were added to produce a combined score for each gap. The results for the top and bottom 10 gaps are provided in the report. Additional tables in the report rank the gaps according to the individual (uncombined) scores.

Applications, Value, and Use

Vendors interested in providing capabilities that utilities value highly can use the information in this update in their product planning and development. The top-scoring gaps present opportunities for solution providers: utility representatives assessed these gaps as containing a good balance of impact and probability of success. On the other hand, the bottom-scoring gaps may not offer an impact that is commensurate with the difficulty of achieving successful solutions to address them.
