Abstract

Sustainable water resource management balances demand with supply. It requires effective and efficient freshwater use by consumers, within watersheds, and across communities. Economic, social, and environmental disruption can occur when and where freshwater availability is swamped by demand due to human activities, such as over-development, or natural forces, such as drought. For more than a decade, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has been leading a science and technology development initiative to enhance water resource sustainability throughout the electricity enterprise and around the world. Managing limited, highly variable freshwater resources under increasing development pressures represents one of global society’s great challenges. To reduce risks at power plants and build resiliency within watersheds, EPRI is accelerating commercialization of innovative dry cooling technologies that promise near-term reductions in freshwater withdrawal and consumption, as well as advancing concepts with longer-term breakthrough potential.
