In 2015 Hydro-Québec began deployment of a cellular wireless communications system for distribution automation, replacing existing analog telephone lines for overhead lines. The system encompasses 4,400 poles, which are the points of service.
The testing and selection of a new communication system for distributed automation involved a research and development (R&D) phase and a pilot deployment. The R&D phase included laboratory tests as well as tests at the Institut de Recherche d'Hydro-Québec (IREQ) experimental line.
The assessment of potential technologies included a detailed characterization of Hydro-Québec distribution automation applications in order to identify communication requirements of these applications.
This case study includes results of technology tests, cost-benefit analyses, and a pilot project, as well lessons learned in the process of selecting and deploying a cellular system.
