This FirstEnergy case study for the EPRI Smart Grid Demonstration Initiative describes the Integrated Control Platform Visualization (ICPV) tool deployed and used in an area of Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), a FirstEnergy operating company
The ICPV was developed by First Energy with BPL Global to provide an integrated, comprehensive view of information related to the operation of the distribution system. The (ICPV) tool is used to show data about distribution system devices installed in four substations and on their circuits, comprising FirstEnergy’s EPRI Smart Grid Host Site Project.
There are four types of devices from which data is displayed via the ICPV: direct load control devices, distribution line sensors, substation meters and ice storage equipment for permanent peak load shifting.
The data is collected using cellular technology, housed and managed in the FirstEnergy Integrated Control Platform and then presented through a software based visualization tool. The ICPV tool provides near real-time information about the condition of the distribution system that has not been accessible before. Historical information is also available for troubleshooting and planning purposes.
This case study addresses the data collection from the distribution system line sensors, and its warehousing and the presentment of information to electric distribution system engineers and operators
