This paper describes a mechanism that can reduce the cost of installing demand-response (DR) capability in various electric devices and appliances in homes and businesses and examines the value proposition for a modular approach to DR-ready appliances. This mechanism, a standard interface socket manufactured as part of appliances, devices, and machines, will enable DR connectivity through the use of communication modules that can simply be plugged in by the consumer. This mechanism can flexibly accommodate future demand-control features beyond simple on/off actions and can prepare appliances and machines today to take on these future roles and functions in DR and demand control. This has the potential to establish a new paradigm for how utilities or others can obtain DR resources from customers. The paper discusses some of the possible market mechanisms that could make this feasible for all of the stakeholders involved and describes a cost/benefit analysis framework to examine, describe, and analyze the streams of costs and benefits involved.
