Abstract
Because of their small size, ultrafine particles (UFPs) are easily inhaled and are primarily deposited in the respiratory tract via diffusion. These particles have also been found to be widely distributed throughout the body to such organs as liver, spleen, kidneys, brain, and heart. Both the epidemiological and toxicological literatures yield some evidence linking UFPs to adverse health effects. This issue brief summarizes the sources, chemical formation, ambient measurements and health effects related to UFPs.
