Abstract
This report describes the assumptions and results for advanced vehicle simulation analysis. A midsize sedan was used to investigate the conventional, pre-transmission parallel, input power-split, series, and full electric architectures. Variations of these architectures were also investigated such as charge-sustaining hybrid electric vehicles, charge-depleting plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and extended-range electric-vehicles (EREVs). The differences in these vehicle architectures and variations are discussed along with two design philosophies. The design philosophies were used to limit the design space for satisfying the common set of design requirements. The design requirements included acceleration, top-speed, grade-ability and urban drive cycle charge-depleting distance. The design results were presented for vehicle test mass and component labeling. The vehicles were then subject to simulated certification and aggressive drive schedule testing to characterize charge-depleting and charge-sustaining operation.
