The evolving electricity sector is increasingly dependent on information technology and telecommunications infrastructure that ensures the reliability of the electric grid, making cyber/physical security and data privacy a critical priority for utilities. Cyber security measures must be designed and implemented to protect the grid from attacks by terrorists and hackers, while technology also strengthens the grid’s resilience against natural disasters and inadvertent threats such as equipment failures and user errors.

Substantive research can address emerging threats to an interconnected electric system through cross-sector collaborative studies on cyber security standards, business processes, and technologies that protect the grid. EPRI undertakes collaborative research in the industry to develop these grid technologies, best practices, and controls on data privacy.

Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI)

EPRI is conducting a project to develop standard security objectives for AMI systems, which provide meter data on a real time basis for utilities and customers. Our research will allow third-party vendors to develop security applications to use and display alerts generated by meters that offer situational awareness to AMI operators.

EPRI has already coordinated with major AMI vendors to identify specific alerts and alarms for which standard security objects should be developed. Our work intends to reflect a developing consensus among vendors as to how each of the alerts and alarms should be represented. The interoperability of the AMI vendors' implementations is expected to be verified in a laboratory environment.
