The Jim H. McClung Lighting Research Foundation was begun in 2001 and is dedicated to furthering lighting research in areas that improve the human condition. It is funded and overseen by Acuity Brands Lighting, its Agents, Suppliers, and Friends. The JHMLRF will focus, but not be limited to, research in the area of human performance:

  • Light and human health/photobiology
  • Light and human performance
  • Light and motivation/perception
  • Light and environmental conditions
The first research project funded by the JHMLRF and performed in partnership with the EPRI LRO is entitled "Relationship Between Light and the Development and Growth of Internal Solid Cancers." This work is reported in EPRI Report 1011162 published in September 2004.

The second research project, co-funded by the JHMLRF is partnership with the EPRI LRO, is entitled “Demand Responsive Buildings: Establishing a role for dimmable lighting”. This work seeks to analyze the process and effect of using dimmable lighting or other alternatives as a tool to reduce demand requirements of electricity at peak times. The first set of results from is work can be found in the July 2007 issue of IESNA’s Leukos Journal at http://www.ies.org/leukos/Volume4/number1.cfm. The final results of this project will be published in an upcoming EPRI report.
